JetBrains Toolbox Desktop Application

What is JetBrains Toolbox application?

On November 2, 2015 JetBrains introduced a new subscription model called JetBrains Toolbox and opened access to all its developer tools with its new 'All Products' plan. Being subscribed to 'All Products' means an ability to decide which of JetBrains tools to use for a particular project or task and an ability to switch from one tool to another any time you want. JetBrains Toolbox desktop application helps you to manage all these developer tools. In other words, JetBrains Toolbox app is an application manager for JetBrains tools.

What exactly JetBrains Toolbox app can do?

Toolbox app can do following things with JetBrains products:

  • Download and install a product from scratch
  • Update an installed product (or all products at once) to a newer version
  • Immediately rollback to the previous version of a product
  • Uninstall a product
  • All features listed above available for Early Access Programs (EAPs)

What other features JetBrains Toolbox app has?

Toolbox lists all projects you're working on in one place regardless the fact you can use different tools and IDEs for them. It is convenient and let you focus on project itself more than on answering the questions like "Did I work on it in IntelliJ or WebStorm?"

Toolbox app offers a Google Chrome extension which allows you to checkout GitHub projects and open them in your IDE in just one click. Install the extension from Chrome web store.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Should I buy a license for Toolbox app?
A. No, Toolbox app is free of charge.

What if I already have some JetBrains tools installed?
A. That's OK. In most cases Toolbox can detect these IDEs and work with them, without certain features. However, if you decide to stay with Toolbox app we'd recommend to uninstall these previously installed tools and then install them again using Toolbox.

Q. Where are the IDEs located on my hard drive?
A. These are locations for different OSes:

Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox\apps
OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps
Linux: ~/.local/share/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps

Q. I used to tune some JVM options for IntelliJ IDEA launcher. Does Toolbox app provide a way to edit IDE configs?
A. It does not at the moment. You need to configure JVM options manually. However, we're working on this feature and it will be available soon.
