Installation Notes for ReSharper 4

  1. Exit all running Visual Studio and Document Explorer (MSDN) instances.
  2. Install .NET Framework 3.5.
  3. Run the ReSharper 4 installation (there's a single setup for all VS versions).
  4. Launch Visual Studio.
  5. Develop with pleasure!

Advanced installation options:

  • Experimental Visual Studio Hives
To install ReSharper 4 into an experimental Visual Studio hive, perform the following steps:
    • Get the ReSharper binaries of the build you want to register into the experimental hive by running the regular installation. If you do not want to install R# for any of the main hives, uncheck all of the Visual Studio integration checkboxes. This will produce the needed set of binaries and omit any per-VS-version integration steps.
    • Register the R# binaries for the desired Visual Studio hive with the JetBrains.VSIntegration.Install.InstallExperimentalHive build task from the JetBrains.Platform.ReSharper.VSIntegration assembly. For an example task usage, see the attached InstallExperimentalHive.Proj file.

  • Side-by-Side ReSharper Installations
You may want to install more than one R# instance on the same machine, but for different Visual Studio hives. Check for the upgrade options in the Advanced installation scenario.

  • Installation Logs
The installation logs are very useful for diagnosing installation problems. The logs can be collected with an installer command line switch:
    msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.msi /Log Install.log

  • Installation Directory
If you're installing more than one ReSharper side-by-side, make sure you specify a different installation location for each of the instances. This can be selected in the installation wizard, or specified in the INSTALLDIR installer property. Also, the installer will try to pick a unique directory on its own.

Installation Notes for ReSharper 3.0

  1. Exit all running Visual Studio and Document Explorer (MSDN) instances.
  2. Run the ReSharper 3.0 installation.
  3. Launch Visual Studio.
  4. Develop with pleasure!

Advanced installation options:

  • Visual Studio "Orcas" 9.0 (not needed for 3.0.2 EAP)
To install ReSharper 3.0 for Visual Studio "Orcas" 9.0, set the VSVERSION installer property to 9.0:
    msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.msi VSVERSION=9.0
NOTE: Projects targeting .NET Framework 3.5 are not supported.

  • Experimental Visual Studio Hives
To install ReSharper 3.0 into an experimental Visual Studio hive, set the VSROOTSUFFIX installer property to the root suffix of the hive you're targeting, for example, "Exp" for the "8.0Exp" hive:
    msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.msi VSROOTSUFFIX=Exp
The VSVERSION and VSROOTSUFFIX properties can be combined together to support experimental hives on Visual Studio 9.0 as well.

  • Side-by-Side ReSharper Installations
You may want to install more than one R# instance on the same machine, but for different Visual Studio hives. For that, you need to prevent the installer from upgrading (removing) the existing installations. To suppress the upgrades, set the installer property NOUPGRADE to 1:
    msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.msi NOUPGRADE=1

  • Installation Logs
The installation logs are very useful for diagnosing installation problems. The logs can be collected with an installer command line switch:
    msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.msi /Log Install.log

  • Installation Directory
If you're installing more than one ReSharper side-by-side, make sure you specify a different installation location for each of the instances. This can be selected in the installation wizard, or specified in the INSTALLDIR installer property.

Installation Notes for ReSharper 2.5

  1. Exit all running Visual Studio instances
  2. Execute the ReSharper 2.5 installation
  3. Launch Visual Studio 2005
  4. Develop with pleasure!

Installation Notes for ReSharper 2.0.x

Visual Studio .NET 2003

  1. Uninstall ReSharper 1.x if you have it installed

  3. Exit all running Visual Studio instances
  4. Execute the ReSharper 2.0.x for VS2003 installation
  5. Launch Visual Studio .NET 2003
  6. Develop with pleasure!
